On September 10, 2024, the Ministry of Steel will host the event "Greening Steel: Pathway to Sustainability" at C.D. Deshmukh Hall, India International Centre, New Delhi. The event will bring together representatives from various Ministries, CPSEs, think tanks, academia, institutions, and steel industry stakeholders.

A key highlight of the event will be a panel discussion titled “Leadership and Innovation: Driving the Green Steel Transition,” featuring experts and veterans from the steel industry. The discussion aims to explore leadership strategies and innovative approaches to advance the green steel transition.

During the event, the Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries will release a pivotal report titled “Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan.” This report, developed by 14 Task Forces constituted by the Ministry, outlines a comprehensive pathway towards the decarbonization of India’s steel sector.

The report covers several crucial areas:

Current State and Challenges: An assessment of the steel sector’s carbon footprint and the hurdles in achieving decarbonization.

Key Levers of Decarbonization: Strategies such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, material efficiency, process transition, carbon capture, use of green hydrogen, and biochar.

Technological Innovations: The latest advancements in technology and practices aimed at reducing emissions.

Policy Frameworks: Analysis of current policies and recommendations for enhancements to support decarbonization.

Future Outlook: Vision for a sustainable steel industry and the roles of various stakeholders in achieving these objectives.

Roadmap and Action Plan: Strategies and actions required from both the government and industry players.

The Ministry of Steel is committed to adopting these strategies to reduce carbon emissions and align with India’s target of achieving net-zero emissions as part of its nationally determined commitments (NDCs). The report is expected to be a significant step in guiding the steel sector towards low carbon emissions and sustainability.
