NGT Orders Swift Action on Delhi Drain Desilting

The National Green Tribunal has directed authorities to expedite the desilting of Delhi's drains, including Barapullah, Kushak, and Sunehri Pul. The tribunal criticized the Delhi Jal Board for delays and imposed a Rs 20,000 fine. It also ordered the opening of vents in Barapullah drain without causing issues for residents and questioned the DJB's sewage generation calculations.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed authorities to expedite action on desilting key drains in Delhi, such as Barapullah, Kushak, and Sunehri Pul.

Expressing concern that removed silt often returns to drains during rains, the tribunal emphasized the need for effective silt removal measures. It fined the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) Rs 20,000 for delayed reporting.

During proceedings, the NGT demanded better compliance from the DJB and local authorities, highlighting issues with sewage treatment and the construction of new plants. The matter is set for further hearing on November 7.
