Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani man, has been arrested on accusations of plotting an attack against a Jewish center in New York City in support of the Islamic State, according to Canadian immigration officials.
Khan, 20, was apprehended in Canada last week as he allegedly attempted to enter the U.S. He has been charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS. U.S. authorities claim Khan planned a mass shooting in Brooklyn, coinciding with the first anniversary of a Hamas attack in Israel.
Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller revealed that Khan entered Canada on a student visa in June 2023, and began showing his support for ISIS online by November. Miller emphasized the seriousness of the security breach, stressing the need for vigilance. Canada has since reduced the approval of student visas.
