Nicaragua Strips Nationality of 135 Deportees
Nicaragua's government has revoked the nationality of 135 individuals who were deported to Guatemala after being released from prison. Their property will also be confiscated as compensation for their alleged crimes against Nicaragua's sovereignty. The group includes members of a missionary organization, Catholic laypeople, and students.
Nicaragua's government announced on Tuesday that it has revoked the nationality of 135 individuals deported to Guatemala after their recent release from prison. These individuals were convicted of crimes against the sovereignty, independence, and self-determination of the Nicaraguan people.
The authorities stated that the confiscation of the deportees' assets will serve as compensation for the damage caused by their criminal activities. This group includes members of the Texas-based Mountain Gateway missionary organization, as well as Catholic laypeople and students.
The White House had previously urged Nicaragua to release the prisoners on humanitarian grounds, emphasizing that no concessions were made in exchange for their release. This move follows a mass exodus of 222 political prisoners to the United States in February last year, who were also stripped of their nationality.
