The Centre on Friday extended the deadline for the Commission of Inquiry to submit its report on the Manipur violence, shifting the due date to November 20, 2024. The investigation has claimed over 220 lives since it began.

Headed by former chief justice of Gauhati High Court Ajai Lamba, the commission was established on June 4, 2023. It also includes retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar. Their mandate is to probe the causes and spread of violence targeting multiple communities since May 3, 2023.

The commission, originally asked to conclude within six months, is now tasked with inquiring into all relevant aspects, including possible dereliction of duty by authorities, leading to the violence. The Manipur government's suggestion on May 29, 2023, led to the formation of the commission under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952.
