Children's Minister and Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence, Karen Chhour, has expressed her deep appreciation for social workers across the country on Aotearoa New Zealand Social Workers' Day.

"Today, I want to acknowledge the incredible dedication of social workers—not just today, but every day," Minister Chhour said. "Their commitment to supporting young people and helping to bring about positive change in New Zealand is truly commendable."

Minister Chhour highlighted the vital role social workers play in shaping the lives of vulnerable youth, helping them reach their full potential in environments free from violence and filled with care and support. She emphasized the importance of communities coming together to uplift whānau rather than turning a blind eye to difficult situations.

"Social workers play a crucial part in helping individuals and families overcome trauma and other challenges so they can lead fulfilling lives," she said, extending her recognition to those supporting families in domestic and family violence situations.

Minister Chhour also praised the continuous efforts of social workers who collaborate closely with children, whānau, and victim-survivors, acknowledging the tremendous effort that goes into their work.
