Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim to Foster Stronger Ties on Visit to China
Malaysia's king Sultan Ibrahim embarks on a landmark visit to China, meeting President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. The visit, the first by a Malaysian monarch in a decade, aims to enhance bilateral relations and support infrastructure projects connecting Malaysia and Singapore. This visit underscores Malaysia's commitment to strengthening its partnership with China.
Malaysia's king, Sultan Ibrahim, will visit China starting Thursday, marking the first visit by a Malaysian monarch in a decade. During the visit, he will meet President Xi Jinping to possibly seek support for connectivity projects linking Malaysia and Singapore. Accompanying him will be Malaysia's transport and housing ministers, as confirmed by the foreign ministry.
The foreign ministry highlighted that this visit provides an opportunity to reaffirm shared commitments to ensuring dynamic and forward-looking Malaysia-China relations. Sultan Ibrahim, who became the country's 17th king in January under Malaysia's unique rotational monarchy system, has signaled his intention to engage in political issues, proposing that the state oil firm Petronas and the anti-corruption agency report directly to the king.
Sultan Ibrahim will also meet China's Premier Li Qiang, who backed Malaysia's $10-billion rail link initiative aimed at establishing a Pan-Asia Railway extending from Kunming in China to Singapore. This move aligns with Sultan Ibrahim's plans to revive a stalled high-speed rail project between Malaysia and Singapore. Both countries maintain economic discussions, despite tensions over South China Sea claims.
