Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso has expressed strong support for the ongoing investigations into financial irregularities involving a suspended official from the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights (CRLR) at the Eastern Cape regional Land Claims office. The minister approved the immediate suspension of the implicated officials as part of a comprehensive response to the allegations. Chief Land Claims Commissioner Nomfundo Ntloko confirmed that the CRLR has fully supported investigations by law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the commission's commitment to eradicating corruption within the land restitution process.
Nyhontso highlighted that the CRLR has been cooperative with law enforcement, including the South African Police Service's Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks), ensuring that all necessary legal protocols are followed. The suspended official and her alleged accomplices have been arrested and are scheduled to appear in the East London Magistrates Court on Monday.
"Corruption within the department will not be tolerated, and tough action will be taken against any officials implicated," Nyhontso stated firmly, reinforcing the government's zero-tolerance stance on corruption. In a related effort to bolster transparency and integrity in land reform processes, the minister urged stakeholders to engage with the commission to report any suspicious activities. The ministry is committed to ensuring that land restitution efforts serve the communities they are intended to benefit, free from the taint of corruption. As investigations continue, the ministry is also working on strategies to enhance accountability and strengthen governance within the CRLR, aiming to restore public trust in land reform initiatives.
