The German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has announced plans to boost its bodyguard numbers significantly, citing increasing security threats both domestically and internationally.

Holger Münch, head of the BKA, told the RND newspaper group that the office plans to increase its current force of over 500 bodyguards by 100 next year and another 100 thereafter.

"This has to do not just with growing dangers at home but also abroad, for example with the Ukraine or Gaza wars," Münch stated. The BKA provides protection for key politicians, including President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and other top officials, especially ahead of the national election scheduled for September 28 next year.
