Iran Signals Readiness to Resolve Nuclear Standoff Amid Global Tensions
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the UN, expressing readiness to end the nuclear standoff with the West and calling for dialogue to resolve Russia's war in Ukraine. He emphasized the need for easing U.S. sanctions, criticized Israel, and highlighted Iran's growing ties with Russia.
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian announced at the United Nations General Assembly that his nation is prepared to resolve its nuclear standoff with Western countries. Pezeshkian has urged an end to Russia's conflict in Ukraine through dialogue, while calling for the easing of U.S. sanctions that have weakened Iran's economy.
"We are ready to engage with participants of the 2015 nuclear deal. If the deal's commitments are implemented fully and in good faith, dialogue on other issues can follow," Pezeshkian stated. The nuclear deal originally restricted Iran's uranium enrichment, but those constraints were breached following President Trump's 2018 withdrawal and the subsequent reimposition of sanctions.
The U.S., European allies, and Israel suspect Iran's nuclear program could be a covert weapons development effort, though Iran claims it is solely for peaceful uses. Tensions have risen following Iranian-backed attacks in Gaza and Israel. Pezeshkian accentuated Iran's desire for regional peace and decried the escalation of violence in Lebanon.
