Israel Returns Bodies of Palestinian Martyrs Amid Rising Tensions
Israel returned the bodies of 88 Palestinians killed in its Gaza military offensive amid ongoing conflict. The Gaza health ministry refused to bury them until Israel disclosed details of their identities. The Red Cross emphasized the humanitarian need for proper burial, while the fighting continues, escalating with airstrikes in Lebanon and Gaza.
Israel on Wednesday returned the bodies of 88 Palestinians killed during its military offensive in the Gaza Strip, according to reports. The Gaza health ministry refused to bury the bodies until Israel provided details about their identities and death circumstances.
The bodies were transported into Gaza in a container via an Israeli-controlled crossing. However, Palestinian officials reported that no information about the victims' names or ages or the locations where they died was provided. Health officials at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis refused to receive or bury the bodies, urging the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to obtain details from Israel.
The health ministry stated, "The procedures to receive the container (carrying the bodies) have been halted until the full data and information about those bodies is available so their relatives can identify them." The truck carrying the bodies was told by officials to return to the Israeli crossing.
Ismail Al-Thawabta, head of the Hamas-run Gaza government media office, emphasized, "They must act in accordance with international humanitarian law and in a way that preserves the dignity of the martyrs and their families." The Red Cross, not involved in the body transfer, reiterated that families have the right to news about their loved ones and proper respectful burial, in line with their traditions.
Under International Humanitarian Law, deceased individuals in armed conflicts must be handled with dignity and properly managed. The law requires their search, collection, and evacuation to prevent people from going missing, the Red Cross added.
The Civil Emergency Service in Gaza has reported around 10,000 individuals missing in the ongoing conflict. Gaza health authorities have confirmed over 41,000 Palestinians killed in the near year-long assault Israel launched following an October 7 attack by Hamas fighters that killed 1,200 Israelis and captured around 250 hostages.
Meanwhile, Israel has launched intense airstrikes on Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, which has been launching rockets at Israel in solidarity with Palestinians, further escalating the conflict.
Despite efforts to negotiate a Gaza ceasefire, fighting continued. Israeli military strikes killed at least 14 Palestinians on Wednesday. In Rafah, near the Egyptian border, ongoing clashes resulted in several deaths, including a woman and her children. Additional Israeli strikes in Gaza continued to claim lives. Tanks have also moved into the northern Gaza Strip, causing further casualties.
