Jaishankar Calls for Urgent UN Security Council Reform, Advocates for Global South Representation
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the need for comprehensive reform in the UN Security Council to include proper representation for countries of the Global South. Speaking during the G20 Brasil 2024's Foreign Ministers meeting, he highlighted that the Council's current structure impedes its effectiveness and credibility. Jaishankar also called for reforms in the multilateral trading system and international financial architecture to address persistent development challenges and climate-related issues.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has stressed the urgent need for comprehensive reform in the UN Security Council, advocating for better representation for countries of the Global South. He made these statements at the 2nd Foreign Ministers meeting of G20 Brasil 2024 under the theme, 'Building a just world and a sustainable planet'.
Jaishankar noted that although the world has evolved dramatically since the UN's inception, the Security Council remains trapped in outdated structures that undermine its ability to maintain international peace and stability. He emphasized that the body must expand its membership to remain effective and credible.
Additionally, Jaishankar called for reforms in the multilateral trading system and the international financial architecture to address pressing issues like climate change and development challenges. He highlighted that the work done during India's G20 presidency set the stage for continued progress in Brazil's tenure.
