Stone-throwing protesters in Karachi clashed with police on Sunday, as they attempted to reach the U.S. consulate during demonstrations over the killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah by Israel. Protesters were seen chanting "Death to America" and carrying posters of Nasrallah.
Police officials reported that seven officers were injured and are currently receiving treatment in hospital due to the stones thrown by the protesters. Deputy Inspector General Asad Raza stated, 'Police had to resort to baton charging and tear gas against those who breached the cordons in a bid to disperse the crowd.' The protesters had attempted to go beyond the agreed-upon boundaries set by the organizers.
Authorities plan to register criminal cases against protesters who engaged in violent actions. The rally, which gathered around 3,000 individuals, was organized by the pro-Iran Shi'ite religious political party Majlis Wahadatul Muslimeen. This demonstration follows Nasrallah's death in an airstrike in Beirut. In response, Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel and Iran vowed to avenge Nasrallah's death.
