At least 10 Vietnamese fishermen have been injured after their boat was attacked by a foreign vessel while fishing near the Paracel islands, claimed by both China and Vietnam, according to state media reports on Monday.
The attack occurred on Sunday, reported Thanh Nien newspaper, citing authorities in Quang Ngai province. However, details about the foreign vessel or the nature of the attack were not provided.
Three fishermen suffered broken legs and arms, said Nguyen Thanh Bien, captain of the fishing boat QNg 957.39 TS. The vessel had departed from the province's port on September 13. Vietnamese and Chinese foreign ministries have not yet commented on the incident. The Paracel islands, known as Hoang Sa in Vietnam, are located in the South China Sea, a critical maritime route mostly claimed by China. Vietnamese authorities are investigating the incident.
