High-Stakes Trade Talks: U.S. and China Tackle Economic Tensions
Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and his U.S. counterpart are poised to discuss trade and economic relations, including recent EV tariffs. Both nations share concerns over tariffs, investment restrictions, and sanctions. The new U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods aim to protect strategic industries, but Beijing has promised retaliation.
Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and his U.S. counterpart are set for a crucial call on trade and economic relations, state-run Xinhua news agency reported, citing individuals familiar with the matter.
The ministers will discuss bilateral economic ties and critical mutual concerns, including electric vehicle (EV) restrictions. This follows a recent meeting in Beijing where Chinese officials expressed significant concerns over additional U.S. tariffs, investment restrictions, and Russia-related sanctions.
In September, new U.S. tariffs on $18 billion of Chinese goods, including EVs and batteries, were implemented. Aimed at safeguarding strategic domestic industries, these measures have prompted China to vow retaliation. The European Union may also impose further EV tariffs on China, with a vote scheduled for October.
