Gugulethu Zwane Appointed as Acting Director-General of Science and Innovation

The Minister of Science and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, has officially appointed Gugulethu Zwane as the Acting Director-General (DG) of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), effective October 1, 2024. This announcement marks a significant transition within the department as it embraces new leadership.
Described as a seasoned professional with over 20 years of diverse experience, Zwane has a rich background that spans multiple fields. She began her career as a microbiologist in the laboratory and transitioned to government service in 2002, joining the DSI when it was still known as the Department of Arts, Culture, Science, and Technology.
Throughout her career, Zwane has held senior and executive positions in various State-owned entities, which has allowed her to amass valuable experience in areas such as strategy and policy development, project management, business process optimization, audit and risk management, and organizational planning. Her extensive skill set also includes expertise in business development and performance management.
Currently, Zwane serves as the Deputy DG responsible for institutional planning and support. In this capacity, she oversees the governance of the DSI and its entities, manages the department's organizational realignment process, and coordinates the activities of the Decadal Plan, which includes the inter-ministerial committee and the inaugural Presidential Plenary on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).
The appointment of Ms. Zwane signifies the conclusion of Mr. Daan du Toit's tenure as Acting Director-General. Professor Nzimande expressed his sincere gratitude to Mr Du Toit for his support and dedicated service to the department during his term. He also extended his best wishes to Ms. Zwane as she steps into her new role as Acting Director-General.
