Singapore-based property magnate Ong Beng Seng faced charges on Friday related to a corruption case involving S Iswaran, a former Indian-origin transport minister. The 78-year-old tycoon is accused of abetting a public servant to receive gifts and obstructing justice.
Iswaran, sentenced to a year in prison on Thursday, confessed to accepting items like Formula 1 tickets and a trip to Doha courtesy of Ong. Court documents revealed Ong's role in instigating Iswaran to obtain these valuable gifts, including a private flight from Singapore to Doha and a luxurious hotel stay.
The corruption case revolves around deals regarding the Singapore Grand Prix, underscoring Iswaran's previous position as chairman of the F1 steering committee. Ong, known for introducing Formula One to Singapore, was among those questioned by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau over the case.
