The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sharply criticized the Congress party following reports alleging the imposition of a 'toilet seat tax' by its government in Himachal Pradesh, a charge refuted by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Initial media reports claimed a monthly fee of Rs 25 per toilet seat in urban households was being added to the sewerage bill, directed to the Jal Shakti Department for water and sanitation. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed disbelief, noting the incongruity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cleanliness initiatives. BJP spokespersons further questioned the Congress's governance strategy, accusing them of failing public welfare.

Despite the negative narrative, Himachal Pradesh's government clarified that there was no enforced 'toilet tax,' asserting that any related notification had been retracted. State representatives criticized BJP for politicizing non-issues, emphasizing financial pledges and development goals made during elections.
