Sunil Sangwan, who previously served as the jail superintendent for Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, has made a victorious foray into politics by winning the Charkhi Dadri seat in Haryana as a BJP candidate.

Sangwan defeated Congress's Manisha Sangwan by a margin of 1,957 votes. The election took place on October 5, with results announced on Tuesday. The former jailer had recently taken voluntary retirement, thus leaving his post to join the BJP shortly before the elections.

He has an extensive background in corrections, having served at various jails, including the Sunaria jail in Rohtak, where the Dera chief is lodged. His political ascent is notable given his ties to his father, former MLA and ex-minister Satpal Sangwan. This development in Haryana politics takes place as Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was granted a 20-day parole last week by the Haryana government.
