Tensions Rise as Taiwan Confronts the Threat of Chinese Blockade
Taiwan's Defence Minister warns that a Chinese blockade, akin to an act of war, would severely impact global trade. China's military activities around Taiwan, including recent drills simulating blockades, heighten tensions. Taiwan and international allies oppose China's sovereignty claims over the Taiwan Strait.
Tensions between China and Taiwan have escalated following recent Chinese military exercises around the island, which included simulating blockades of key ports. Taiwan's Defence Minister, Wellington Koo, has warned that such a blockade would be considered an act of war, with significant ramifications for global trade.
The exercises, dubbed "Joint Sword-2024B," have sparked concerns worldwide due to the Taiwan Strait's critical role in global freight. Approximately one-fifth of global freight traverses this strategic waterway, and a blockade would have consequences beyond Taiwan, Koo emphasized.
China's military presence continues, with a Chinese aircraft carrier group recently sailing through the Taiwan Strait. This demonstration of force underscores China's ongoing assertion of its sovereignty over Taiwan, a claim strongly opposed by Taiwan and allied nations such as the United States.
