Saudi-Iranian Defense Dialogue: Building New Bridges
Saudi Arabia's armed forces chief, Fayyad al-Ruwaili, visited Tehran to discuss defense ties with Iran. This is part of renewed efforts after Riyadh and Tehran restarted relations in March 2023. The visit follows Trump's re-election and persistent regional efforts to enhance Middle Eastern stability.
The chief of staff of Saudi Arabia's armed forces, Fayyad al-Ruwaili, made an official visit to Tehran on Sunday. His agenda? Meeting with Iranian defense officials to discuss broadening defense ties, as reported by Iranian state media.
This diplomatic move comes in the wake of Donald Trump's re-election as U.S. President, a leader who has vocalized ambitions of fostering peace in the Middle East. Trump's initial term saw him facilitate normalization deals between Arab states and Israel, infamous adversaries in the region.
While Saudi Arabia hasn't formalized relations with Israel, discussions led by Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, hint at possible advancements. During his visit, al-Ruwaili led a senior Saudi military delegation to meet Iran's Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, where they explored defense diplomacy and opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
