Sudan's Crisis: The UN's Urgent Call for Humanitarian Aid Amidst Conflict
The UN Security Council is evaluating a Britain-proposed resolution demanding a ceasefire in Sudan. The ongoing conflict has led to a major displacement crisis and severe food insecurity. The resolution urges safe humanitarian aid distribution as millions are affected by famine and forced displacement.
The United Nations Security Council is currently reviewing a resolution draft from Britain that calls for an immediate halt to hostilities in Sudan, urging for unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid. The resolution comes amidst a severe displacement crisis triggered by an ongoing conflict that erupted between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023.
This conflict, rooted in a power struggle ahead of a planned transition to civilian rule, has led to significant human rights violations blamed largely on the RSF, who deny involvement. Recently, two RSF generals were designated under the first U.N. sanctions of this conflict by a Security Council committee.
More than half of Sudan's population faces severe food insecurity as the war persists. The resolution demands that RSF cease its offensives and allow safe passage for crucial aid. With nearly 25 million people in need, including those displaced to other countries, the council emphasizes maintaining border openings like the Adre crossing with Chad.
