The Delhi High Court has expressed strong disapproval of the city government for failing to comply with its order to relocate the inmates of the Asha Kiran shelter home. This comes in light of 14 tragic deaths at the facility.
The court stressed that human lives cannot be sacrificed due to administrative negligence. It has summoned the Secretary of the Delhi government's Department of Social Welfare to appear on December 2 to address the issue.
The relocation is needed as Asha Kiran is overcrowded, with 928 inmates against a capacity of 570. However, bureaucratic gridlock over the purchase of a new building has delayed the process.
