The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has taken a significant step to enhance India’s naval capabilities by signing two contracts worth approximately Rs 2,867 crore. These agreements focus on the integration of cutting-edge technologies onboard Indian submarines, aiming to boost their endurance and firepower. The contracts were formalized on December 30, 2024, in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) Plug Development

The first contract, valued at Rs 1,990 crore, was signed with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, for the construction of the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) Plug and its integration with Indian submarines. This project is part of a larger initiative to indigenize advanced submarine technologies.

  • Indigenous Innovation: The AIP system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is a revolutionary technology designed to enhance the underwater endurance of conventional submarines. By minimizing the need for surfacing to recharge batteries, AIP systems significantly extend operational stealth.
  • ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ Initiative: The project aligns with India's vision of self-reliance, generating nearly three lakh man-days of employment across sectors while strengthening indigenous technological capabilities.
  • Strategic Impact: Once integrated, submarines equipped with the AIP system will have increased combat readiness and operational endurance, providing a tactical edge in underwater warfare.

Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) Integration

The second contract, worth approximately Rs 877 crore, was signed with Naval Group, France, for the integration of Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedoes (EHWT) into the Kalvari-class submarines of the Indian Navy.

  • Advanced Firepower: The EHWT, designed by DRDO, represents a state-of-the-art upgrade in submarine weaponry. These torpedoes boast precision targeting, longer range, and enhanced payload capabilities, making them a formidable addition to the submarine fleet.
  • Collaborative Effort: The integration process will be a joint endeavor involving the Indian Navy, DRDO, and Naval Group, France. This partnership underscores India’s commitment to fostering international collaboration while leveraging domestic expertise.
  • Kalvari-Class Modernization: These torpedoes will significantly augment the combat capabilities of Kalvari-class submarines, already lauded for their stealth and versatility.

Broader Implications and Future Vision

These agreements not only strengthen India’s naval arsenal but also reaffirm its commitment to modernizing defence infrastructure. The focus on indigenous development, coupled with strategic international partnerships, highlights India’s dual approach to achieving technological self-reliance while maintaining global cooperation.

Additionally, the projects aim to enhance employment and innovation, encouraging further investment in India’s growing defence manufacturing sector. The successful implementation of these technologies will bolster national security and ensure India remains prepared to meet emerging maritime challenges.

These developments position India’s naval forces as a technologically advanced and formidable entity in the region, setting a benchmark for future defence initiatives.
