Dominique Pelicot, convicted of drugging and raping his ex-wife, Gisele Pelicot, has chosen not to appeal his 20-year prison sentence, his lawyer confirmed on Monday. The high-profile case has shocked France and brought attention to the pervasive issue of rape culture.
Pelicot's lawyer, Beatrice Zavarro, stated that her client wishes to spare his ex-wife the ordeal of another trial. In contrast, 17 of the 50 men also convicted in the case have filed appeals following long legal proceedings that have lasted over three months.
Gisele Pelicot’s bravery during the trial has galvanized campaigners calling for tougher measures against sexual violence. She waived her right to anonymity, determined to hold her abusers accountable publicly and shift the shame onto them, not herself.
