A British-Lebanese securities trader, Joseph El-Khouri, who was wanted in the United States for alleged insider dealing, emerged victorious in his extradition battle at the United Kingdom's Supreme Court on Wednesday. El-Khouri was indicted alongside five others in New York in 2019 for allegedly participating in an insider trading ring, facing charges including securities and wire fraud.
Prosecutors in the U.S. claimed El-Khouri made significant payments, such as chartering a yacht in Greece and renting a ski chalet in France, to gain confidential inside information, resulting in profits of approximately $2 million. However, El-Khouri opposed his extradition to the U.S., and the Supreme Court sided with him, stating that the majority of the alleged criminal activities transpired within the UK.
The court's written ruling asserted, "No part of the conduct alleged to constitute insider dealing can sensibly be considered to have occurred in the United States."
