ACLU Sues for Migrant Access at Guantanamo Base

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit on Wednesday to gain access to migrants detained at a U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay. The organization argues that the detainees are unlawfully denied communication and legal counsel. The civil rights group is acting on behalf of detainees' families.

Lee Gelernt, leading the legal challenge, emphasized that the isolation of migrants contradicts American legal principles. The legal action comes after the ACLU and other rights groups contacted Trump administration officials, urging the government to provide means of communication for the detainees.

While the Trump administration has disclosed little about the migrants transferred to Guantanamo Bay, they reported that the initial detainees were linked to criminal activities. Homeland Security head Kristi Noem stated alleged crimes included homicide and robbery. President Trump announced intentions to potentially expand the detainee capacity at the base considerably.
