Rail Crossing Upgrade on State Highway 1B Set to Begin Next Week

The upgrade work includes raising the road level and constructing new escape lanes to prevent vehicles, particularly longer freight trucks, from queuing over the railway tracks.

Construction is set to commence next week on a long-awaited upgrade to the rail crossing at State Highway 1B Telephone Road, east of Hamilton. This project, aimed at enhancing safety and improving traffic flow, is scheduled for completion by mid-year, Minister of Transport Chris Bishop has announced.

The upgrade work includes raising the road level and constructing new escape lanes to prevent vehicles, particularly longer freight trucks, from queuing over the railway tracks. The road surface will be elevated by up to 410mm over a 90-meter stretch on Telephone Road north of the rail crossing, as well as on the Telephone Road/Holland Road/Marshmeadow Road section south of the crossing.

New escape lanes will be installed on the north side of Holland Road, ensuring that long vehicles heading south do not obstruct the railway line while waiting to turn into Holland Road. Additionally, for vehicles traveling east on Holland Road and intending to turn left onto Telephone Road, the escape lane will provide a designated waiting area if a train temporarily blocks access to the road.

Improved Safety Features

To further enhance safety at the intersection, the project will include upgraded line markings, additional signage, and new electronic warning signals that activate when a train is approaching.

Temporary Road Closures

Due to the road elevation work, the intersection of Telephone Road, Holland Road, and Marshmeadow Road will be closed to all traffic starting Wednesday, February 19. The closure is expected to last approximately three months, with a target completion date set for mid-year.

Government and Local Support

Minister Bishop acknowledged the patience of the local community and praised the advocacy efforts of Waikato MP Tim Van de Molen in bringing the project to fruition. He also extended gratitude to NZTA, KiwiRail, and the Waikato District Council for their collaborative efforts in developing a practical and cost-effective solution.

"Economic growth and productivity are key priorities for the Government, and I am pleased this important upgrade is finally underway," said Minister Bishop. "I look forward to seeing traffic flow restored and improved safety measures benefiting both residents and freight transport."

With construction commencing next week, motorists and local businesses are advised to plan accordingly and stay updated on alternative routes until the project is completed.
