A court in Tajikistan handed down prison sentences to three men for attempting to murder the nation's chief mufti, Sayeedmukarram Abduqodirzoda. The attempt, which occurred following a mosque prayer service, left the religious leader with minor injuries. The assailant, a 24-year-old student, was sentenced to 26 years for terrorism and attempted murder. Additional sentences included a 13-year term for another man on terrorism charges and a two-year sentence for a third man for failing to report the crime.

According to the Supreme Court Chairman Rustam Mirzozoda, the investigation uncovered 'signs of extremism' in the attack, yet provided no further details. Sayeedmukarram Abduqodirzoda, 61, leads the Islamic Council of Ulema, Tajikistan's highest Islamic authority, and is known for his warnings against extremism.

In recent news, Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin assured that the nation's 843-mile border with Afghanistan remains under strict surveillance and control. The country has experienced three militant attacks this year in the city of Kulob, with two thwarted. An earlier prison outbreak involving inmates linked to Islamic State led to five deaths during an escape attempt.
