A parliamentary panel has called upon the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to submit a report by February 17 detailing necessary legal amendments to curb the dissemination of controversial content. This move follows bipartisan concerns over YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia's remarks during a YouTube program.
During the meeting of the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, various MPs expressed their apprehensions regarding Allahbadia's comments. They demanded stringent measures to prevent recurrences of such incidents, while the committee's chairperson, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, aligned with their concerns in the presence of senior ministry officials.
The committee communicated with the Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju, requesting a note on potential amendments to media-related laws. There is a growing consensus that existing laws need amendments to regulate content on social media and OTT platforms, with members discussing whether such remarks should be criminalized or addressed through refined regulations.
