The committee assigned to draft the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Gujarat convened its initial meeting on Thursday in New Delhi, led by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai.

Held at Gujarat Bhavan, the meeting prioritized discussions on the objectives, scope, and framework necessary for establishing a UCC specific to the state. An official release stated that the BJP government formed the committee to evaluate the need for such a code and to draft corresponding legislation.

The committee emphasized an inclusive consultation process, involving various stakeholders, to explore existing laws thoroughly. Addressing the need for equality and justice, the team aims to create a cohesive legal structure, particularly in personal laws, ensuring equal rights and reinforcing social harmony. After consulting religious leaders and citizens, the findings will be submitted within 45 days.
