Libyan security forces have discovered 11 more bodies of migrants in a mass grave in the country’s southeast, a security official with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Thursday. The total number of bodies found has climbed to 39, spread across 55 graves.

This somber discovery follows an earlier report from the attorney general who announced finding 28 bodies in northern Kufra. The International Organization for Migration stated that many of these bodies displayed gunshot wounds, painting a grim picture of danger faced by migrants traversing Libya.

The capital, Tripoli, is roughly 1,700 kilometers away from Kufra, the main city in the area, where authorities anticipate uncovering more graves as recovery operations continue. The remains are being cataloged, with DNA samples collected for further investigation. Libya has emerged as a pivotal route for migrants escaping crises, exacerbated since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.
