Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called on the Maharashtra government to expedite the implementation of three new criminal laws across all its police commissionerates. Addressing a review meeting attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Shah emphasized the need for the timely adoption of these laws that mark a significant shift from colonial-era statutes.

Included in this legislative update are the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. These laws, which came into force on July 1 of the last year, substitute the long-standing Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872, representing a modern approach to criminal justice.

In addition to deploying the new legal framework, Shah urged the establishment of a Directorate of Prosecution within Maharashtra. This step is intended to align with the new laws and ensure a cohesive strategy toward law enforcement and legal prosecution in the state.
