Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has highlighted the critical role of discussion and debate in sustaining democracy, warning against the emerging trend of planned deadlocks within legislative bodies.
Addressing reporters at a two-day orientation event for Haryana Legislative Assembly members, Birla emphasized that disagreements strengthen democracy, but intentional stalemates in Vidhan Sabhas or parliament are detrimental.
He commended India’s democratic progress post-independence, citing the removal of colonial-era laws and the creation of new ones to address modern needs. Birla also stressed the need for effective legislative training to ensure legislators can meet public expectations and excel in governance.
