In a significant judicial ruling, a special court in Surat, Gujarat, sentenced two individuals to life imprisonment for the gangrape of a 17-year-old girl. The verdict was delivered by Special Judge VV Parmar, who found Munna Paswan and Raju Vishwakarma guilty under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, POCSO Act, and the SC/ST Act.
The crime, which took place during the Navratri festival last year, involved three accused. However, one of them, Shiv Shankar alias Dayashankar Chourasiya, died post-arrest due to health complications. The court's judgment spanned over 525 pages, detailing the harrowing ordeal of the victim and the undisputed evidence against the convicted.
Public prosecutor Nayan Sukhadwala confirmed that the court has directed the state to compensate the victim with Rs 10 lakh. The conviction marks the first under the provisions of the BNS in Surat, reflecting the court's stringent stance against such crimes. The victim's account, corroborated by witnesses and scientific evidence, led to a historic judgment in the region.
