An Israeli tourist, identified as David Bona, faced legal challenges in Kerala after being arrested for unauthorized use of a satellite phone on Friday. The incident prompted police action due to the device's use, which is regulated in India, leading to Bona's brief detention and subsequent bail release.
Bona, along with his spouse, was en route to Thekkady from Kumarakom when the satellite phone in question came into use. Authorities were tipped off by the Intelligence wing, resulting in Bona's arrest in Mundakayam, a senior district police officer reported. The phone, purchased in Dubai, was brought to India without awareness of legal constraints against its use.
The detained tourist underwent questioning sessions conducted by police, the Intelligence wing, and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Following these interrogations, Bona was released on bail, although the satellite phone has been confiscated pending further investigation. The police filed an FIR under the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act provisions.
