USTM Chancellor Arrested Amid OBC Certificate Controversy

Mahbabul Haque, Chancellor of USTM, was arrested from his Guwahati home by Sribhumi police. The arrest follows a controversy involving Haque obtaining an OBC certificate fraudulently. Last year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced legal action after the certificate was canceled. Haque has also been accused of contributing to Guwahati's flooding issues.

Mahbabul Haque, the Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), was taken into custody from his residence in Guwahati early Saturday morning, as confirmed by police sources.

The arrest was carried out by the Sribhumi district police, but further information has not been disclosed. Haque's legal troubles began last year over an OBC certificate, allegedly obtained fraudulently.

The certificate, acquired in the 1990s in Sribhumi district, was later canceled. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that legal proceedings against Haque would ensue. Meanwhile, Sarma has also linked Haque and USTM to "flood jihad," attributing Guwahati's flooding problems to runoff from the university campus.
