Switzerland's Potential Role in Ukraine Peacekeeping

Switzerland may contribute troops to a future peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, contingent on a request and government approval, Swiss armed forces chief Thomas Suessli revealed in a Sunday interview. Suessli estimated that around 200 soldiers could be mobilized in nine to 12 months if necessary, emphasizing that the decision rests with the government and parliament.

Currently, talks of dispatching peacekeepers remain hypothetical, as the evolving situation between Russia and Ukraine leaves uncertainties. Suessli noted, "There's no peace yet, and there's been no request from the United Nations."

Although neutral, Switzerland participates in various global peacekeeping missions, most notably in Kosovo under NATO's Kosovo Force (KFOR). European nations have been considering the deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine amid diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict, which escalated with Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
