Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston has welcomed the latest data from Stats NZ, which highlights the continued resurgence of New Zealand's tourism sector. The newly released Tourism Satellite Account shows that total tourism expenditure in New Zealand reached $44.4 billion for the year ending March 2024. This marks an increase of $5.6 billion, or 14.6 per cent, compared to March 2023.
A significant driver of this growth is international tourism, with overseas visitor expenditure surging by $6.3 billion, a 59.9 per cent increase, reaching a total of $16.9 billion.
"The big story here is that international visitor spending grew by nearly 60 per cent over the past year," Minister Upston stated. "This data confirms a strong recovery since the reopening of our borders in June 2022, proving that travelers worldwide were eager to experience the beauty and culture of New Zealand once again."
Recognizing the sector's vital role in economic growth, the government has committed to further bolstering tourism with several key investments:
- $500,000 allocated to market New Zealand as the 'go now' destination for Australian tourists.
- $30 million directed towards enhancing conservation and visitor-related experiences.
- $3 million set aside for boosting regional tourism initiatives.
- $9 million invested in the development of Great Rides cycle infrastructure.
Tourism currently contributes 7.5 per cent of GDP, cementing its status as New Zealand's second-largest export sector. Minister Upston emphasized her ambition to restore tourism to its pre-pandemic status as the country's top export earner.
However, she also acknowledged a decline in domestic tourism expenditure. "This is a reminder of the importance of growing our economy so that more New Zealanders can explore their own backyard and support local tourism businesses," she added.
With these strategic investments and a strong global appeal, New Zealand's tourism industry is well-positioned for sustained growth, benefiting both international visitors and local communities alike.
