Historian Faces Threats Amid Maharaj Controversy

The Kolhapur police have initiated legal action against an individual who allegedly issued threats to historian Indrajeet Sawant. The threats also include derogatory comments about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son, Sambhaji Maharaj, authorities reported on Wednesday.

Sawant, a resident of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, was reportedly threatened via a phone call in the early hours of Tuesday. The caller, identifying himself as 'Prashant Koratkar,' threatened Sawant's life, accusing him of inciting hatred against the Brahmin community, according to official sources.

The police are in the process of confirming the caller's identity. Following this threat, Sawant shared the audio of the call on social media and filed a complaint with the Juna Rajwada police station in Kolhapur. Consequently, police have registered a case under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, tackling charges from promoting enmity to provoking religious sentiments. Further investigation is underway with cyber cell support.
