The Government is accelerating efforts to enhance sustainable farming and improve agricultural productivity through the newly announced 'Science for Farmers' initiative. Agriculture Minister Todd McClay confirmed that the programme will be showcased at major agricultural events nationwide, beginning with the Dargaville, Wānaka, Feilding, and Kirwee Agricultural Shows over the next two months.
Bringing Science to the Farm
"Science for Farmers connects leading agricultural scientists with farmers to share research and innovation that is already delivering results on farms across the country," McClay stated.
The programme is a collaboration between the Ministry for Primary Industries' On Farm Support service and key research institutions, including AgResearch, AgriZeroNZ, LIC, Massey University, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, and the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre.
Practical Research for Real Results
The initiative provides farmers with direct access to cutting-edge science and practical strategies to improve farm productivity while meeting environmental goals. Some key areas of focus include:
- Alternative pasture types: Exploring climate-resilient pasture options to future-proof farming systems against climate change.
- Advanced genetics: Utilizing genetic advancements to boost production while meeting sustainability and emissions targets.
- On-farm management systems: Implementing strategies that enhance profitability and business resilience.
Driving Economic Growth in Rural New Zealand
The Government's commitment to rural development extends beyond scientific advancement. Minister McClay emphasized the broader goal of increasing rural productivity, creating jobs, and unlocking New Zealand's full economic potential.
"Small steps can make a big difference. Every extra kilogram of milksolids, meat, wool, or an additional tray of fruit produced through innovation and science directly benefits rural communities. This initiative supports our ambitious goal of doubling the value of New Zealand's agricultural exports within the next decade," McClay said.
With Science for Farmers, the Government is ensuring that innovation reaches those who need it most—farmers on the ground—helping them navigate the challenges of modern farming while maximizing economic and environmental benefits.
