Vietnamese Journalist Sentenced: A Voice Silenced

A Vietnamese court on Thursday sentenced former journalist Truong Huy San, widely recognized by his pen name Huy Duc, to 30 months in prison. He was found guilty of 'abusing democratic freedoms' through his social media posts, according to state reports.

The conviction stems from San’s 13 Facebook posts that allegedly caused 'a negative impact on social order and safety,' per the Vietnam News Agency. San, a former soldier and author of the banned book 'The Winning Side,' pled guilty at the trial, although his legal representatives could not be reached immediately for comment.

Despite economic reforms, Vietnam's government remains intolerant of media critiques. Calls for San’s release came from Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and PEN America. 'Silencing Truong Huy San stifles not just his voice but the entire society’s right to truth,' said Anh-Thu Vo from PEN America.
