On Sunday, Ajay Rai, the President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, met with the family of a journalist, Raghvendra Bajpai, who was shot dead. Rai called for the immediate arrest of the murderers and demanded a Rs 1 crore compensation for the bereaved family, along with a government job for Bajpai's widow.
Bajpai, a reporter for a Hindi daily, was tragically killed by assailants on the Sitapur-Delhi National Highway. Allegations surfaced that his murder was a retaliation for his investigative reporting on paddy procurement irregularities. Rai strongly condemned the murder, highlighting a breakdown in law and order and warning of statewide protests if justice is not served.
BJP MLA Shashank Trivedi intervened during a protest by Bajpai's family and residents, pledging support from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Following the intervention, Bajpai's cremation proceeded. Meanwhile, the police have made eight arrests and continue their inquiry into the case.
