The Supreme Court has issued a directive mandating all state governments to immediately adhere to existing rules by paying the salaries and perquisites of the chairpersons and members of state and district consumer redressal bodies.

Justices Abhay S Oka and N Kotiswar Singh also instructed the central government to evaluate potential amendments to the Consumer Protection (Salary, Allowances, and Conditions of Service of President and Members of the State Commission and District Commission) Model Rules, 2020.

If the Government of India fails to make a decision regarding the arrangement, the court has indicated it may utilize its powers under Article 142 of the constitution to enforce compliance.
