An attempt to reach the United States turned into a nightmare for Pankaj Rawat, a resident of Haryana. Despite paying Rs 35 lakh to agents and enduring a perilous journey spanning 11 countries, his dream was shattered when he was deported back to India.
This tortuous journey, through what is infamously known as the 'dunki' or 'donkey' route, saw Rawat traversing from Guyana to Mexico before being caught by US authorities at the Tecate border. He was held in detention for 15 days prior to deportation.
The Gujarat police are now investigating a complaint by Rawat against two agents, Abdulla and Pradeep. The agents are accused of human trafficking and defrauding Rawat, threatening his life, and stripping him of his possessions along his harrowing route.
