Jes Staley Challenges FCA Over Epstein Ties and Allegations
Jes Staley, former Barclays boss, contested an FCA-imposed ban and fine, claiming he was unaware of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes. His statements are allegedly contradictory to evidence from his past roles, raising questions about his ties with Epstein and the inconsistent stances taken by him.
Former Barclays CEO Jes Staley testified on Tuesday, claiming shock over Jeffrey Epstein's 2019 arrest for sex trafficking, despite contradicting evidence presented by Britain's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Staley, in the midst of appealing a proposed ban and £1.8 million fine by the FCA, asserted ignorance of Epstein's criminal activities.
On the second day of his appeal at London's Upper Tribunal, Staley maintained his surprise at Epstein's 2019 arrest, yet FCA lawyers contested his knowledge, stating allegations were known while Staley was at JPMorgan, where Epstein was a client. This allegedly undermines Staley's defense.
Legal conflicts have persisted, with FCA lawyer Leigh-Ann Mulcahy referencing Staley's U.S. Virgin Islands lawsuit deposition, where he acknowledged distancing from Epstein in 2015 after learning of Epstein's deceitful past. Staley's appeal has unearthed details of Barclays' probe handling, scrutinizing his entrenched ties to Epstein.
