UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has launched the 'UN80 Initiative', intending to reform and improve the efficiency of the 80-year-old world organization. Guterres highlighted the financial difficulties faced by the UN due to shrinking resources and called for immediate structural changes to tackle these challenges.
The initiative's focus includes reviewing UN mandates from member states and enhancing the organization's cost-effectiveness. A task force led by Under-Secretary-General Guy Ryder will oversee this process, aiming for long-term sustainability under unpredictable global conditions.
The UN faces significant financial strain, with some member states delaying or withholding payment. Despite this, Guterres emphasized that the United Nations must continue optimizing its operations to serve its global peacekeeping and humanitarian missions effectively.
