In a significant development, seventeen Naxalites, nine of whom had cash rewards totaling Rs 24 lakh on their heads, laid down their arms in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday, according to a senior police official.

The group, including a couple, surrendered to senior police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials. Their decision stemmed from dissatisfaction with the "hollow" and "inhuman" Maoist ideology, the exploitation of innocent tribals by senior members, and the growing influence of security forces, as stated by Bijapur's Senior Superintendent of Police, Jitendra Kumar Yadav.

The Naxalites were also motivated by the 'Niya Nellanar' (your good village) initiative, which aims to provide essential services and develop interior regions. The cadres who surrendered had a range of roles within the Gangaloor area committee of the Maoist organization, and they have been promised assistance and rehabilitation to reintegrate into society as per government policy.
