In a high-level review meeting held on May 7, 2025, in New Delhi, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Ayush and Minister of State for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, assessed preparations for the 10th International Day of Yoga (IDY), which will be celebrated on June 21, 2025. The milestone edition of this global wellness initiative is expected to be one of the most expansive and impactful yet, with a focus on uniting the world through the ethos of yoga.
Government's Vision for a Global Yoga Movement
During the meeting, Shri Jadhav underscored the Government of India’s aspiration to make IDY 2025 a landmark event. “We will work with utmost sincerity and commitment to ensure that International Day of Yoga 2025 is not only a grand success but also serves as a source of inspiration for the entire world,” he remarked. The Minister emphasized a collaborative approach, encouraging officials and stakeholders to pursue the theme of ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’ with dedication and enthusiasm.
The emphasis this year is not just on the scale of the celebration, but also on its resonance and inclusivity. The Minister reiterated that the message of yoga must reach every individual—across urban and rural regions of India, and beyond national borders.
Strategic Initiatives: From Grassroots to Global Impact
The review meeting focused on the planning and rollout of several key initiatives designed to promote yoga's reach, relevance, and sustainability:
-
Yoga Sangam: A major integration drive that aims to embed yoga practices into schools, healthcare institutions, and corporate organizations. This initiative will see mass yoga sessions and wellness education programs being held at educational and medical facilities nationwide.
-
Harit Yoga: Marrying yoga with environmental consciousness, this initiative promotes tree plantation drives and other eco-friendly activities linked with yoga events. The goal is to nurture both individual and planetary well-being.
-
Yoga Connect: A diplomatic and cultural outreach effort, Yoga Connect will engage Indian diaspora communities and international organizations to foster participation in global yoga events, workshops, and virtual sessions.
-
Yoga Bandhan: Promoting social cohesion and emotional wellness, Yoga Bandhan will encourage collective participation in yoga sessions across communities, building bridges across cultural, generational, and regional divides.
These initiatives not only celebrate yoga as a physical discipline but also as a cultural and environmental movement.
Special Focus: Youth and Educational Institutions
Minister Jadhav placed particular emphasis on youth engagement for IDY 2025. “Young people are the torchbearers of change,” he stated. Schools, colleges, and universities will serve as key nodes for awareness campaigns, competitions, and mass yoga demonstrations. Collaborations with student groups, teachers, and community leaders are being prioritized to maximize participation and visibility.
A Decade of International Yoga Day: A Look Back and Ahead
The United Nations officially adopted June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2015, following an address by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the UN General Assembly. In just a decade, the event has grown into a global wellness phenomenon, celebrated in over 180 countries with millions participating annually.
As the world prepares for the 10th edition, IDY 2025 is being seen as both a celebration of this journey and a call to action. It symbolizes India’s soft power and cultural leadership in the domain of wellness, sustainability, and unity.
Global Participation and Digital Expansion
This year’s event will also leverage digital platforms to conduct hybrid yoga sessions, live streams, and interactive experiences. Ministries, embassies, NGOs, and fitness influencers will play vital roles in disseminating content and hosting programs in various languages to ensure accessibility.
The Ministry of Ayush is also coordinating with international bodies and local authorities to organize sunrise yoga sessions at iconic global landmarks—symbolizing peace, harmony, and the universality of yoga.
As June 21 approaches, India is gearing up to deliver a spectacular and unifying celebration of yoga that transcends borders and ideologies. With leadership from Shri Prataprao Jadhav and coordinated efforts across ministries, communities, and nations, International Day of Yoga 2025 is set to inspire millions to embrace yoga as a path to personal and planetary well-being.
