Chaitanya Baghel, the son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, was arrested on charges linked to a massive liquor scam in the state. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges he managed more than Rs 1,000 crore of illicit proceeds, channeling Rs 16.7 crore into his real estate ventures.
His arrest on his 38th birthday from his Bhilai residence has sparked controversy, particularly with Bhupesh Baghel claiming that federal agencies are being misused against opposition figures. He mentioned trust in the judiciary while vowing cooperation with the investigation.
The ED's investigation focuses on the alleged misuse of funds between 2019 and 2022, during Bhupesh Baghel's tenure. The agency has arrested several individuals, including political and government officials, as part of its probe into the extensive scheme, which reportedly caused significant financial losses to the state's coffers.
